Classic Restorations to display restoration work

Classic Restorations of Alyth, Scotland will have a display of restoration work at the AOVC Classic Show.  Charles gives us some background on his obsession.

This business (or obsession) was a natural progression from my childhood freedom to visit a wartime garage where my father stored his car for the duration. He would be cleaning and polishing and I would be free to sit in, crawl under and lift bonnets of a variety of stored cars from Ford Eights to Rolls Royce's. I was hooked on cars at the age of five and have been ever since.

I couldn't wait to leave school and get into a garage as an apprentice mechanic. The apprenticeship in a country garage in the 1950's covered not only mechanics but panel beating, welding, painting, electrical and other necessary skills, working with cars, buses, tractors, combine harvesters and as my boss said "anything that opens and shuts and runs on wheels".

Following National Service in the R.A.F. and twenty-five years as a technical teacher I started Classic Restorations in a double lock-up in 1983. The Classic and Vintage car movement was well established by then and demand for the traditional skills was rising which motivated me to get involved again, the modern motor trade held no attraction for me.

The Company now employs eighteen people covering all trades in-house: -

MECHANICS, PANELBEATERS, COACHBUILDERS, PAINTERS, COACH TRIMMERS

Nearly all of our staff have been apprentices here and have been brought up to work on vintage and classic vehicles.

Our Irish connection goes back many years; we started by attending Kilbrony 2000 with a small stand and display of work. Since then we have had a trade stand at Kilbrony every year except when the event has been cancelled due to bad weather. We have several customers in Northern Ireland and make frequent trips to see and assess cars for restoration and repair work.

It is our intention to continue our appearances in Northern Ireland by attending the Ballymena event in future years.

Classic Restorations ( Scotland) Ltd is based in Alyth, Scotland.
